Cold Moon

December's Full Moon is known as the Cold Moon. Also another name that I like is the Long Night Moon, since this is the last Full Moon before the Winter Solstice turns the Earth back toward the Sun.

A Full Moon on a long, cold Winter's evening reminds me of the 70's rock group Three Dog Night. The origin of their name comes from a story about Australian aborigines who, on cold nights in the outback, sleep with their dogs for warmth. The coldest evenings are known as "three dog nights".

While tonight is assuredly not the coldest of what this Winter has in store, the sky is clear and cold. I don't think "two fat cats and an extra blanket" is a good name for a band though.

Enceladus

Recent image from the Cassini-Huygens mission of the 'Fountains of Enceladus' gives us visual evidence of geological activity upon this moon of Saturn.

Space is so cool. Go click on the Cassini-Huygens link and do a little exploration of your own. It's truly inspiring!
